IEC Materials
Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials are developed using different modes of communication with a range of materials and media. IEC materials include print, electronic, outdoor publicity and other types of conventional and non-conventional communication mediums, including performing arts, traditional arts and folk media. IEC materials are strategic tools that transmit information and messages intended to facilitate a change in social conditions and individual behavior. As HIV is primarily transmitted due to risk behavior, behavior change activities are critical in supporting protective behavior. While some IEC activities may be effective if implemented alone, most are more effective if put into practice along with other complementary activities. In order to be successful, some IEC materials/activities must be complemented by, and integrated into, other intervention forms or strategies. All the IEC materials included in this section have been pilot-tested and/or used on infrastructure sites and with local communities affected by infrastructure and construction. While these materials are examples for future material development, they should be used and adapted with a strong knowledge of the socio-economic and cultural factors influencing local populations.
